About RRB Group D
The Railway Recruitment Boards invite applications, on behalf of the Railway Recruitment Cells, for posts in Level 1 of the 7th CPC Pay Matrix. CEN No. 08/2024, published on 22 January 2025, gave an initial pay of ₹18,000 and, at a glance, 32,438 vacancies, which the Railways may revise. The age band in that notice is 18 to 36 years as on 1 January 2025, with a one-time relaxation of 3 years beyond the upper age limit and further relaxations set out in the CEN. Annexure A of the CEN states the minimum qualification for the posts listed there as 10th pass, or ITI, or equivalent, or a National Apprenticeship Certificate granted by the NCVT.
The written stage in para 14.1 is a computer-based test of objective questions, each of 1 mark. The notice gives 90 minutes and an indicative split of 100 questions: General Science 25, Mathematics 25, General Intelligence and Reasoning 30, and General Awareness and Current Affairs 20. It says that split may vary. Eligible PwBD candidates who use a scribe get 120 minutes. A wrong answer costs one-third of a mark. Questions are shown in the language the candidate chose and in English; if the two differ, the English wording prevails. The languages are English, Hindi and 13 regional languages (Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Konkani, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu).
Shortlisting uses normalised marks when the test is held in more than one session. The CEN sets minimum percentages for shortlisting of 40% for UR and EWS and 30% for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), SC and ST, and allows a relaxation of 2 marks for PwBD candidates if reserved vacancies would otherwise not be filled. The Railways may hold the CBT in more than one stage; if a second stage is held, the first may be treated as qualifying. These practice tests follow the single CBT in para 14.1 and report raw marks.
Candidates are called for a qualifying Physical Efficiency Test at about three times the vacancies (the Railways may change that ratio), then for document verification in the ratio 1:1 and a medical examination. PwBD candidates specified in the CEN, Course Completed Act Apprentices trained in Railway establishments, and ex-servicemen are exempt from the PET. For Course Completed Act Apprentices, the CEN gives weightage so that one third of the marks in the final merit list is based on the NCVT examination, and if that result is lower than the CBT marks, the higher of the two is used. A tie on the normalised percentile is broken by age (the older candidate first) and then by the alphabetical order of names.
