About RRB JE
The Railway Recruitment Boards recruit Junior Engineers and Depot Material Superintendents (pay level 6) through a centralised employment notice. CEN 04/2026 is for these two posts. A candidate applies to only one RRB. The stages are a first-stage computer-based test (CBT 1), a second-stage computer-based test (CBT 2), document verification and a medical examination.
CBT 1 is common to every notified post and is only a screening test. It has 100 objective questions for 100 marks in 90 minutes on one clock (120 minutes for a candidate who is eligible to use a scribe): Mathematics 30, General Intelligence and Reasoning 25, General Awareness 15 and General Science 30. Each question carries 1 mark, and a wrong answer costs one third of a mark. The subject-wise numbers in the notice are indicative. Calculators are not allowed. The normalised CBT 1 score is used only to shortlist candidates for CBT 2, at 15 times the community-wise vacancies of that RRB, a limit the Railways may raise or lower. It is not used in the final panel.
To be eligible, a candidate needs 40% (UR and EWS), 30% (OBC-NCL and SC) or 25% (ST). The same percentages apply to ex-servicemen according to their community. Where there is a shortage of PwBD candidates, these marks may be relaxed by 2. Where a CBT is held in more than one session, raw marks are normalised.
CBT 2 has 150 questions for 150 marks in 120 minutes (160 minutes with a scribe), again with one-third negative marking, and a virtual calculator is provided. The common part is General Awareness 15, Physics and Chemistry 15, Basics of Computers and Applications 10, and Basics of Environment and Pollution Control 10. The other 100 questions are Technical Abilities for the candidate's exam group: Civil and Allied, Electrical and Allied, Electronics and Allied, or Mechanical and Allied Engineering, following Annexure VIII of the notice. Shortlisting for document verification uses the normalised CBT 2 marks. For posts common to more than one exam group, a merit index places candidates on one list.
